This program begins the session of 11/30/1988 at Ephraim’s. We presented part of that evening in podcasts 6-8, way back in 2007, but decided to go back and produce the whole session in its entirety — using my Apogee Duet audio converter for better sound than in the earlier programs. In any case, the musicians in this program are Jimmy Mazzy on banjo and vocals, Fred Lind on cornet, Dr. Paul Meymaris on clarinet, myself John Kafalas on trombone, Bill Whitcraft on piano, Hans Brack on bass, and Stu Grover on drums.
The selections in this program: Get Out and Get Under the Moon, Monday Date, Don’t Worry Bout Me, and an old Prohibition-era tune called My Cellar.

This program is taken from a session recorded August 6, 1987, at Ephraim’s. The musicians are Jeff Hughes (cornet/vocals), Rich Giordano (piano), Al Ehrenfried (bass), and John Kafalas (trombone). I owe a debt of thanks to Bob Kitchin, who recorded the session and produced the master tape. I recently got a better digital audio converter than the one I used to use, so I decided to re-master it; I hope you agree the improved sound quality is worth it! This program presents the third segment from the Jeff Hughes Quartet session at Ephraim’s in Sudbury, Massachusetts, on August 6, 1987. I recently got a better digital audio converter (an Apogee Duet) than the one I used to use — technology is a lot more advanced in 2019 than it was in 2006 — so I decided to digitize the tape again. I hope you find the sound quality an improvement. This set consists of all Duke Ellington tunes and features Jeff Hughes (cornet/vocals), Rich Giordano (piano), Al Ehrenfried (bass) and John Kafalas (trombone). I owe a debt of thanks to Bob Kitchin, who recorded the session and produced the master tape.

This program continues with the fifth segment from the session of August 31, 1988. The musicians are Jimmy Mazzy (banjo/vocals), Fred Lind (cornet), Paul Meymaris (clarinet), John Kafalas (trombone/euphonium), Don Frothingham (piano), and Stu Grover (drums), as well as a bass player I’m not entirely sure of, but I think it’s probably Al Ehrenfried. [Note: While listening to this program after uploading, I heard Paul say something to “Steve” about taking a solo — which means the bass player isn’t Al after all; it’s Steve Pratt.] The selections are “What a Little Moonlight Can Do” and “Route 66.”

This program presents a band I was with from 2000-2004 or so in Arizona, the Jack Webb New Orleans Jazz Band (named, of course, in honor of actor Jack Webb, who was a jazz enthusiast and starred in “Pete Kelly’s Blues”). The band was led by Prof. Guy Senese (cornet, soprano sax) and also featured John Kafalas (trombone), Jack Frost (guitar, banjo), Lisa Frost (bass), and Dan Nance (drums).
