Podcast #26: More from July 27, 1988

December 29th, 2008

This month’s program continues with the session from 7/27/88 at Ephraim’s.  The musicians are Jimmy Mazzy (banjo/vocals), Fred Lind (cornet), Paul Meymaris (clarinet), John Kafalas (trombone), Don Frothingham (piano), and Stu Grover (drums).

It is with sadness that I report the passing of Paul Meymaris, whose clarinet playing was always spot-on, and who was also a great dentist.  Paul treated a number of famous musicians, including Edmond Hall, whose clarinet style can be heard in Paul’s own playing.  I have a lot more tape in the vault, so you’ll be able to continue enjoying Paul’s work for a long time — he was a good friend, and he’ll be missed!

Tommy Turk, unidentified 1949 cuts

August 16th, 2008

This podcast departs from our regular programming to present some rare recordings by Tommy Turk, a trombonist who was one of the best but who has faded into relative obscurity.  I don’t know the other musicians on these recordings, nor do I know where they were made, but I think they are from 1949.  If you have any additional information, please let me know!
